Hi , My name is Gurleen. I have always had weight problem meaning I have always been a big girl. I currently weight 116 kilos. I have put on 17 kilos in last 6 months due to a injury in july last yr which is why I take lots of nerve meds and pain meds. Due to this gain in my weight, doctor got me to do my blood test to rule out type 2 diabetic. I am going today to see her and to know the bitter truth. She would be putting me on metformin I imagine. I wonder if I would loose weight on it. All this weight that I have gained has made my life harder. Very insecure about my self that I can’t even be open to my own hubby. He is amazing yet I feel scared and depressed. Do you guys think metformin would be helpfull at all? I am losing hope as well as losing myself.. !

I don’t know why but I have hypothyroidism as well. Metformin is certainly working for me but I am not even close to having diabetes. I don’t deprive myself but I try to stay under my caloric count for the day. I JOURNAL everything I eat and keep track of my calories. It HAS worked for me but I exercise a tiny bit as well – meaning I walk. I eat meat but only the correct portion. I have lost 21 lbs in 2.5 months.

Metformin has acid dissociation constant values (pKa) of 2.8 and 11.5, so exists very largely as the hydrophilic cationic species at physiological pH values. The metformin pKa values make metformin a stronger base than most other basic medications with less than 0.01% nonionized in blood. Furthermore, the lipid solubility of the nonionized species is slight as shown by its low logP value (log(10) of the distribution coefficient of the nonionized form between octanol and water) of -1.43. These chemical parameters indicate low lipophilicity and, consequently, rapid passive diffusion of metformin through cell membranes is unlikely. As a result of its low lipid solubility it requires the transporter SLC22A1 in order for it to enter cells.[115][116] The logP of metformin is less than that of phenformin (-0.84) because two methyl substituents on metformin impart lesser lipophilicity than the larger phenylethyl side chain in phenformin. More lipophilic derivatives of metformin are presently under investigation with the aim of producing prodrugs with superior oral absorption than metformin.[117]

What’s the link between vitamin D, gum health, and diabetes? 22 Aug 2018 Diabetes is a common group of chronic metabolic diseases that cause high blood sugar (glucose) levels in the body due to defects in insulin production and/or function. Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas when we eat food. Insulin allows sugar to go from the blood into the cells. If the cells of the body are not using insulin well, or if the body is unable to make any or enough insulin, sugar builds up in the blood.
Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is an autosomal dominant inherited form of diabetes, due to one of several single-gene mutations causing defects in insulin production.[49] It is significantly less common than the three main types. The name of this disease refers to early hypotheses as to its nature. Being due to a defective gene, this disease varies in age at presentation and in severity according to the specific gene defect; thus there are at least 13 subtypes of MODY. People with MODY often can control it without using insulin.
Infections: Certain infections — such as frequent yeast infections of the genitals, dental infections, skin infections, and frequent urinary tract infections — may result from suppression of the immune system by diabetes and by the presence of glucose in the tissues, which allows bacteria to grow. These infections can also be an indicator of poor blood sugar control in a person known to have diabetes.

Several tests may be used for diagnosing diabetes. A simple blood test known as a hemoglobin A1C (or glycated hemoglobin test) measures average blood glucose levels over the past three months. (Why three months? Because glucose attaches to a protein called hemoglobin in red blood cells, and those cells get recycled and replenished about every three months.)
Long-term complications of diabetes develop gradually. The longer you have diabetes — and the less controlled your blood sugar — the higher the risk of complications. Eventually, diabetes complications may be disabling or even life-threatening. Possible complications include:

Both DPP-4 inhibitors and SGLT-2 inhibitors conferred lower risk for severe hypoglycemia than sulfonylureas and promoted weight loss. Moreover, the price of these new oral agents is currently several times higher than that of human insulin in most markets. Therefore, the expert panel decided that recommending these new agents for universal use as second- or third-line treatment in resource-limited settings would be premature.

SHOW SUB MENU Diabetes mellitus is a diagnostic term for a group of disorders characterized by abnormal glucose homeostasis resulting in elevated blood sugar. It is among the most common of chronic disorders, affecting up to 5–10% of the adult population of the Western world. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing dramatically; it has been estimated that the worldwide prevalence will increase by more than 50% between the years 2000 and 2030 (Wild et al., 2004). It is clearly established that diabetes mellitus is not a single disease, but a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders that share glucose intolerance in common. The concept of genetic heterogeneity (i.e. that different genetic and/or environmental etiologic factors can result in similar phenotypes) has significantly altered the genetic analysis of this common disorder.

q Signs and symptoms[edit] In some cases, a pancreas transplant can restore proper glucose regulation. However, the surgery and accompanying immunosuppression required may be more dangerous than continued insulin replacement therapy, so is generally only used with or some time after a kidney transplant. One reason for this is that introducing a new kidney requires taking immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine, which allows the introduction of a new pancreas to a person with diabetes without any additional immunosuppressive therapy. However, pancreas transplants alone may be beneficial in people with extremely labile type 1 diabetes mellitus.[64]

The extent of weight loss required to reverse type 2 diabetes is much greater than conventionally advised. A clear distinction must be made between weight loss that improves glucose control but leaves blood glucose levels abnormal and weight loss of sufficient degree to normalize pancreatic function. The Belfast diet study provides an example of moderate weight loss leading to reasonably controlled, yet persistent diabetes. This study showed that a mean weight loss of 11 kg decreased fasting blood glucose levels from 10.4 to 7.0 mmol/L but that this abnormal level presaged the all-too-familiar deterioration of control (87).

This type can be further classified as immune-mediated or idiopathic. The majority of type 1 diabetes is of the immune-mediated nature, in which a T cell-mediated autoimmune attack leads to the loss of beta cells and thus insulin.[35] It causes approximately 10% of diabetes mellitus cases in North America and Europe. Most affected people are otherwise healthy and of a healthy weight when onset occurs. Sensitivity and responsiveness to insulin are usually normal, especially in the early stages. Type 1 diabetes can affect children or adults, but was traditionally termed “juvenile diabetes” because a majority of these diabetes cases were in children.[citation needed]

Chlamydia The role of physical activity must be considered. Increased levels of daily activity bring about decreases in liver fat stores (43), and a single bout of exercise substantially decreases both de novo lipogenesis (39) and plasma VLDL (92). Several studies demonstrated that calorie control combined with exercise is much more successful than calorie restriction alone (93). However, exercise programs alone produce no weight loss for overweight middle-aged people (94). The necessary initial major loss of body weight demands a substantial reduction in energy intake. After weight loss, steady weight is most effectively achieved by a combination of dietary restriction and physical activity. Both aerobic and resistance exercise are effective (95). The critical factor is sustainability.
Canagliflozin (Invokana) and dapagliflozin (Farxiga) are oral medications prescribed to treat type 2 diabetics. Is type 2 diabetes serious? Type 2 diabetes is not a death sentence, but it is a very serious disease that demands attention and careful monitoring. There is no such thing as ‘mild’ diabetes. Elevated glucose levels can damage the nervous system, blood vessels, eyes, heart, and kidneys. These complications really impact quality of life (through blindness, amputations, dialysis etc). They also significantly increase the chance of a stroke or heart attack. Managing blood glucose levels immediately, along with other health risk factors (e.g., cholesterol, blood pressure, weight), is necessary for preventing these complications. Losing even a small amount of weight and keeping it off can also improve glucose control as well as have other clinical benefits (read more tips on managing diet and exercise below for more on weight loss). Keep in mind that better diabetes management also has benefits in the here and now – mood and energy levels are adversely affected when your glucose levels are high.

It’s known that type 2 diabetes can be broadly grouped into cases driven either by the inability of pancreatic beta cells to make enough insulin, known as insulin deficiency, or by the inability of liver, muscle or fat tissues to use insulin properly, known as insulin resistance.
Treated With Insulin Dietary factors also influence the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks in excess is associated with an increased risk.[32][33] The type of fats in the diet are important, with saturated fats and trans fatty acids increasing the risk, and polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat decreasing the risk.[26] Eating a lot of white rice appears to play a role in increasing risk.[34] A lack of exercise is believed to cause 7% of cases.[35] Persistent organic pollutants may play a role.[36]

In our opinion, the magnitudes of these effects were small but have the potential to reduce the effectiveness of this therapeutic combination in diabetes treatment. Additional research could help optimize the concurrent use of these important and widely prescribed treatment modalities for diabetes.

July 16, 2016 at 11:02 pm Type 2 diabetes is mainly caused by insulin resistance. This means no matter how much or how little insulin is made, the body can’t use it as well as it should. As a result, glucose can’t be moved from the blood into cells. Over time, the excess sugar in the blood gradually poisons the pancreas causing it to make less insulin and making it even more difficult to keep blood glucose under control.

Health Solutions From Our Sponsors Examples of intermediate-acting insulin formulations I was put on a very strict diet a few years ago. She put me on the max dose of Victoza, Januvia and I was still taking 25 units of insulin at each meal. At that time my A1C was I think a 10. And all my lab work was out of whack. Also a 36g of carbs a day and NO MORE. I was scared but took on the challenge and was very strict, except I gave myself ONE cheat day a week because I knew if I didn’t I would fail the diet, so I had something each week to keep pushing me. The weight just started dropping off. In 3 months time I was down 40lbs and feeling wonderful. I decided to continue on this journey until one day a tragedy in my family so I went off the diet. At that time I was down around 60lbs. BYW, I weighed about 287lbs. when I started. After all the grieving ( which took a toll on me an a while to get through it). I tackled the diet again. Didn’t stay as strict and seen little weight loss. Through the years I have gone off and on the diet. I never once exercised and my skin showed it lol. Let’s see that was around 2013. My marriage was having problems in 2015 and again off the diet I started noticing more weight loss (stress). Marriage Problems fixed. (so I thought) the weight started coming back on. Once again in 2015 more marriage issues. Started losing weight AGAIN LOL. At this time I was around 215lbs. We separated again August of 2016 with my weight dropping at what seemed like a fast pace. This year around April I was weighing in at 175 which was my goal weight from the beginning. I had finally made it and decided it was time to just maintain. Unfortunately it has been increasing at a fast pace. I had my 3rd surgery a month ago and still on limitations ( yes I had started working out to maintain) now I can barely walk down the driveway without feeling like I’m dying. Oh, I have multiple serious medical problems as well, that doesn’t help me and being on disability now. So I went to the dr. Today and weighed in at 196’😲I told my new doctor I’ve had it. So I was put on metformin a while back but wouldn’t take it because I bough it caused weight gain. The dr. Also put me on phentermine. I’m ready to kick this fat back off again and I have a new goal of 150. I’m 5’7 and wear a size 10 when at 170. I have a very large body frame so I don’t have much BMInbut wanna try to get into an eight. I will be extatic. I’m so happy I found this blog. If anyone wants to diet together and keep each other on track, you can add me on Facebook. Missy Cauley is my name and I’m in Illinois. Thanks again everyone.

A healthy diet is the key to control of blood sugar levels in persons with diabetes, and in the prevention of complications of diabetes. Persons who are overweight and having difficulty losing weight can work with their health care provider to find a dietitian, or a weight modification program to help them reach their goal weight. Eating a consistent and well-balanced diet which is low in saturated fat and concentrated sweets, as well as high in fiber, in about the same number of calories at the same times each day is the best thing. Doing so helps the person’s health care provider to prescribe appropriate doses of either insulin or medication, and helps to keep blood sugar levels fairly even – as well as helping to avoid dangerously high or low blood sugar levels.

STEMI Survival in type 1 diabetes patients has improved. The gap between life expectancy for people with type 1 diabetes (diagnosed between 1965 and 1980) and the general U.S. population is now just four years, according to the Pittsburgh Epidemiology of Diabetes Complications (EDC) study. The study suggests that Americans with Type 1 diabetes who were born after 1965 have a life expectancy of 69 years, compared to that of someone without diabetes, which ranges from 74-81 years. The Journal of American Medical Association supports this finding. The most common cause of death is Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Heart Failure, or Kidney Failure. The prognosis for persons with Type 1 Diabetes may be improved through good blood sugar control, which has been proven to slow the progression of diabetes, or even prevent it, and even improve complications in persons with Type 1 Diabetes.

Infographic Health Library Understanding Type 2 Diabetes Since cardiovascular disease is a serious complication associated with diabetes, some have recommended blood pressure levels below 130/80 mmHg.[86] However, evidence supports less than or equal to somewhere between 140/90 mmHg to 160/100 mmHg; the only additional benefit found for blood pressure targets beneath this range was an isolated decrease in stroke risk, and this was accompanied by an increased risk of other serious adverse events.[87][88] A 2016 review found potential harm to treating lower than 140 mmHg.[89] Among medications that lower blood pressure, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) improve outcomes in those with DM while the similar medications angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) do not.[90] Aspirin is also recommended for people with cardiovascular problems, however routine use of aspirin has not been found to improve outcomes in uncomplicated diabetes.[91]

This type of diabetes is categorized as an autoimmune disease and occurs when the body’s misdirected immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Although genetic or environmental triggers are suspected, the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not completely understood. Type 1 accounts for only five to 10 percent of diabetes cases in the United States, and while it can occur at any age, most patients are diagnosed as children or young adults. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to manage their condition.

When you have diabetes, excess sugar (glucose) builds up in your blood. Your kidneys are forced to work overtime to filter and absorb the excess sugar. If your kidneys can’t keep up, the excess sugar is excreted into your urine, dragging along fluids from your tissues. This triggers more frequent urination, which may leave you dehydrated. As you drink more fluids to quench your thirst, you’ll urinate even more.

To characterize pathways associated with increased lifespan and healthspan, the investigators plan to compile a repository of muscle and adipose biopsy samples obtained from young healthy subjects and older adults before and after treatment with potential anti-aging drugs. RNA-Seq analysis will be used to identify a unique biological “fingerprint” for aging in these tissues by comparing changes in gene expression in older adults post-drug therapy to the profiles of young healthy subjects. This overall approach is supported by a grant from the Glenn Foundation for the Study of the Biology of Human Aging.
